SmartLipo is the most advanced technique for performing liposuction. Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Leonard Gray, has been using the SmartLipo laser technology for several years. He likes the ability of SmartLipo to melt fat and especially likes its skin-tightening capabilities. SmartLipo can be performed under local anesthesia, as well as under deeper anesthesia, depending on what the patient wants. Detailed pre-operative markings of the area to be treated and tumescent fluid pre-injection are always performed.
The SmartLipo laser is then introduced to melt fat and tighten the skin. Conventional liposuction then follows to complete the procedure. At Bay Area Plastic Surgery, we like to combine conventional liposuction with SmartLipo to achieve the most complete body contouring. Recovery can be a bit shorter and easier with SmartLipo, and Dr. Gray always recommends a post-operative compression garment to be worn during the recovery period.
How Smartlipo is Performed
Because Smartlipo uses a mini cannula, the incisions are much smaller. The cannula with the laser attachment is inserted through these tiny incisions and targets the fat tissue under the skin, melting it with its laser heat. We can then control the temperature of the laser and with great precision, focus on the fat while leaving other tissue and internal structures untouched. During this process, the fat cells that are hit by the laser will swell, pop and melt. The broken down fat tissues are removed by a small vacuum suction. For smaller areas on the body, the liquefied fat is naturally absorbed by the body and a vacuum may not be necessary.
"Second Time Around - Dr Gray performed my surgery 18 years ago and back then I knew he was the best . My results were incredible and his office was so welcoming and kind. I have moved out of the country to Europe but knew I would only trust him once again . Almost 20 years later the office staff still remains the best Cherisse his nurse is one of a kind and makes the whole process seamless even from out of town. I felt like I knew her for years. I did all my communication through emails until the surgery. So anyone who is considering from out of town it can be done. And Dr Gray is the best out there im sure of it, on a scale of 1-10 I give him a 11! I would very confidentially say he's probably the Picasso of plastic surgery and a real perfectionist."- K. / RealSelf / Aug 27, 2017
"This review is for my consultation only. The women who worked the front desk were so kind and welcoming. Made me feel really comfortable. Reading through the other reviews, it makes it very hard for me to believe that these people had a bad experience. Dr. Gray walked through his office like it was his home and treating everyone in it like they were part of his family. My consultation with him went above and beyond my expectations. He was very thorough and had very kind bedside manner. Sometimes when I read bad reviews, I will look at those people's profile to see what else they have reviewed and more times than not I will see that that person just can't be happy no matter what...anyways, this was for a consultation only, and mine was amazing."- L.N. / Yelp / Jun 29, 2017
"Amazing perfectionist plastic surgeon - I am so happy I found Dr. Gray! He is amazing and so is everyone at his office. One of my implants broke (it was 10 year old). I had a consultation and decided to remove them and then go back after I am done having kids for new implants and more work if need it. I am very happy with my results. Dr. Gray is a perfectionist. You can barely see the scar - it's been 3 weeks! The prices were..."- C. / RealSelf / May 27, 2017

He is a talented surgeon and I have several friends who have had surgery with Dr. Gray all with perfect results. I trust him because I know I will be safe and have a beautiful outcome. During/After the Procedure
Smartlipo is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed at our fully accredited Operating suite. Local or general anesthesia may be used depending on the size of the area being treated. The treatment lasts less than an hour per area. Due to the nature of the procedure, the recovery period is quicker than traditional liposuction. The laser application promotes tissue coagulation so that there is less bleeding, swelling and bruising. The patient will also notice that the skin will tighten around the treatment area as the laser helps in collagen development. Optimal results can be seen within 4 – 6 months.
Ideal Areas for Smartlipo?
As Smartlipo utilizes a smaller cannula, it can target areas where precision is needed such as the neck or the arms. This still includes the more common areas treated for liposuction such as hips, flanks or abdomen. But there are also cases in which traditional liposuction can approach an area better than Smartlipo. This will be discussed to the patient by Dr. Gray during the initial consultation to see which method is better.
Will I Have Scars?
The incisions made with small, just enough for the cannula to be inserted. These incisions do not need any sutures. Often they heal on their own, aided with topical medications.
Fat Gone Away?
Fat cells destroyed by Smartlipo are permanent. This does not mean that new fat cells cannot develop. Adhering to a healthy lifestyle with proper diet and exercise will ensure that the results attained are long-term.
How Much Weight Will I Lose?
It is important to understand that Smartlipo, or even the traditional liposuction method, is not a one-stop solution to being overweight. While fat removal of any kind will result in less weight on the body, in order to be considered for the procedure, the patient must already be close to or near his or her goal weight.
